About the Visual Arts Center
The purpose of the Visual Arts Center is to bring the visual arts to children and adults through exhibitions, education, collections and special events.The Visual Arts Center is made up of six galleries of changing exhibitions featuring local and regional artists, as well as national touring art exhibitions. The galleries include the works of Native American artists, as well as the Raven Industries Children's Studio. Free community lectures and artist receptions are held throughout the year. Admission is free (Fees may be charged for some special exhibits). Fine Arts Trolley Tour
Walk, ride or driveto this free tour of the galleries and artist studios in downtown Sioux Falls. Park free at the Horse Barn Arts Center, 8th & Railroad Center or on downtown streets after 5 p.m. and take the trolley. Visit www.fineartstrolleytour.com for details. Gallery Insights This new program involves speakers who address topics related to current exhibits in our galleries. Learn more. Video segments of some of our current and recent exhibits and artists talking about their works have been produced by CityLink, Sioux Falls' local government information cable channel 16. They are available online HERE. We thank CityLink for working with us on these public service segments.Permanent Collection The Visual Arts Center's permanent collection boasts more than 300 outstanding works by well-known local and regional artists like Oscar Howe and L. Lova Jones, as well as nationally known works by Henry Moore and Maria Martinez. Many pieces from the permanent collection are showcased in the second floor galleries. Recent acquisitions include Charging Bison, a sculpture by one of America's leading African-American artists Richard Hunt. The sculpture may be viewed in the Paladino-Hohm Sculpture Garden, located outside the Washington Pavilion's north wing, during regular public hours. Collectors Circle The Collectors Circle is an education program of the Visual Arts Center that focuses on collecting art. We are planning these activities for Collectors Circle participants:
The importance of the Center's collection has been recognized through a $5,000 grant from the South Dakota Community Foundation to implement the Collectors Circle, as well as to advance the holdings of the Visual Arts Center at the Washington Pavilion. To receive information about Collectors Circle programs, please call (605) 367-7397, ext. 2341. Learning Adventures The Visual Arts Center offers a wide range of educational opportunities. Ever wanted to learn how to sculpt? Paint? Draw? You can learn all that and more. We offer classes for all ages, from toddlers through adults. The center features a painting/drawing classroom and a ceramics/sculpture studio for art classes and workshops. Scholarships are available. A list of current and upcoming classes is available here. Raven Industries Children's Studio Themes from our gallery exhibitions are translated into activities for children ages 3 through 12 in the hands-on Raven Industries Children's Studio. Visiting children can create their own works of art - free of charge! The Raven Industries Children's Studio is located on the second floor of the Visual Arts Center. Docent Training Training for volunteer docents who provide guided educational tours of the Visual Arts Center's exhibitions are held quarterly. |
