The Grupp Art Academy is a 10-week program for high school students who have a passion for art and want to hone their skills. Through thoughtful projects, guest speakers and a nurturing and supportive environment, students have the opportunity to connect with the local arts community and grow as artists themselves. This exhibition brings together the artwork of past students who have gone through the Grupp Art Academy program along with their instructors and the artist who inspired the program’s founding.

Education was always important to the artist Carl Grupp (b. 1939-2019). He was a leader in arts education in South Dakota and one of the most important artists in the Midwest over the last 60 years. From 1969 until 2004, Grupp was a professor at Augustana University, where he was a beloved teacher and mentor to generations of artists. To continue Carl Grupp’s legacy of enhancing and supporting arts in the region, the Carl A. Grupp Charitable Fund has partnered with the Visual Arts Center to create this awesome academy for high school students.

South Dakota Arts Council support is provided with funds from the State of South Dakota, through the Department of Tourism, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
