This exhibition showcases the creativity and commitment of thirteen students from Flandreau High School who participated in a unique college-level art program. Led by Augustana professor, Izia Lindsay, this project guided students on a journey into the world of electronic media.
Throughout six intensive sessions, each lasting six hours, students learned the basics of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. For most of the students, this was their first time engaging with digital tools. The sessions began with an introduction to digital art, where students explored fundamental concepts by creating motifs.
The first project allowed for the exploration of cultural identity. Each student was encouraged to create icons inspired by elements from their tribal heritage. They referenced symbols such as the sun, water, architectural forms and tribal colors. These icons became the foundation for a series of intricate patterns, each telling a unique story through design.
In the second project, students transitioned to Adobe Photoshop where they explored photo manipulation and collage. They worked with various brushes and selection tools while using images from commercial-free websites such as Pixabay, Pexels and Unsplash. These compositions focused on integrating color, texture, shape and form, allowing students to develop and express their visual storytelling skills.
The exhibition Digital Daydreams showcases a series of artworks representative of students’ connections to their culture and journeys as emerging artists. We invite you to witness the innovative work of these talented artists and to experience the richness of stories that are embedded in each artwork.
